Welcome
Seminars are an important part of many academic programmes and provide an opportunity for a group of students to discuss and analyze a range of new material, ideas and concepts together with the tutor. In some University such classes are referred to as seminars and in other they are called tutorials.
It is usually the case that students are asked to take a very active role in their seminars and all students will be invited to speak and contribute in discussions. In this way, it is not only academic understanding that you will gain but also the chance to develop a wide range of personal and key skills. These may include how best to communicate and present your views and to build your confidence when speaking in front of other students.
The purposes of seminars
The specific purposes of seminars and tutorials vary enormously across the University and from discipline to discipline. It is important that you familiarize yourself with any guidance provided by your school. Purposes may include some of the following:
- Providing an opportunity to explore a topic in depth
- Surveying and critically evaluating different viewpoints
- Developing a wide range of communication and study skills
- Building confidence
- Easing communication between students and tutors.
Preparing for seminars
Here is some advice to help you approach seminars at Global University.
- Check with your course information to see if you are expected to do any preparatory work before the seminar, such as completing a specific task, reading a text or noting down questions on a topic. For a first seminar, this is unlikely to be the case, but preparation for future seminars is an important aspect of being a successful student.
- Get there in good time (being late is frowned upon and considered bad manners)
- Pick a seat that enables you to contribute to the class
- Most tutors may begin the first seminar by introducing themselves and explaining the role of the seminar in the module or course. You may be asked to introduce yourself too.
- Check if your course materials (available on Moodle) provide a list of topics to be studied throughout the module, and any hand-in dates for coursework. Your tutor may provide additional information on these in the first seminar.
- Be prepared to talk. Seminars are places where questions are exploded, views are debated and analyzed and students are expected to contribute to the discussion with the tutor and each other.
- Be prepared to listen. You should listen to and respect the views of your colleagues on the course as well as your tutor. You may not agree with them and may wish to challenge or clarify their points but listen carefully first.
- Prepare even if you are not presenting at the seminar. You will get much more from a seminar if you have a sufficient background in the topic to be able to discuss, critique and challenge.
Student-led seminars
During your time at the Global University it is likely that you will be called upon to ‘lead’ a seminar. Formats do vary from course to course but this commonly involves giving some kind of presentation to a small group of peers on a given topic or subject. In some cases you will be assigned a topic whilst on others there may be a degree of choice. Examples of topics may include discussion of a research article, a selected text or source, or a review of current thinking in your discipline.
Some seminars may be structured in the format of a debate, where one or more students need to initiate a discussion on the presentation topics with other students. The student(s) leading the seminar may be required to take a particular stance. This can help hone skills in critical analysis as you may not always be defending an argument or issue that you support.
In some schools, seminars are assessed and contribute to coursework marks whilst in others this is not the case. Check whether seminar participation and presentations are part of your assessed coursework, and where possible look at the marking criteria being used to assess your contribution and performance. However, even if seminar work is not formally assessed as part of your coursework, student-led seminars can be extremely important.
Remember that being engaged in discussions about your subject with your peers – your fellow students – can be a key way of learning, developing your understanding and improving your oral communication skills.
How to lead a good seminar
Being well-prepared is central to giving an effective presentation or leading a seminar discussion. Although you may feel nervous, there are ways of positively using the energy that can provide.
Your module tutor may provide specific guidance about what is expected from your seminar presentation, and may give you tips on how to prepare, or even on the format you need to use to present on the topic. Please follow such guidance carefully.
Pay particular attention to the timing allocated. For example, students may be asked to give a 10 minute presentation and then lead a discussion for a further 10 minutes. Time-keeping is a transferable skills and therefore may be part of what you are learning.
Preparation, practice and discussion in advance about how you will present the session can help avoid over-running the time allocated to you.
Student-led seminar guide
Here is an example of an outline for a 10 minute seminar presentation which you could possibly adapt for your own circumstances and needs.
Timing | Focus |
2-3 minutes | Introduction |
 | ·       Introduce yourself ·       Give the purpose of the talk – or define the problem or the question to be considered ·       Explain the order that you will talk about things, in the structure of your talk. |
5-6 minutes | Main body of the talk |
 | ·       Give the references of the sources you have consulted ·       Explain the main points from your research ·       Highlight any points of contradiction or differing views ·       Identify possible points for discussion |
2 minutes | Conclusion |
 | ·       Summarize main points briefly ·       Draw your own conclusions or recommendations ·       Thank your audience for their attention ·       Invite questions or pose questions for your colleagues |
A self-evaluation seminar checklist
After you have given your seminar presentation take a few moments to review and reflect upon your talk. If you like, you can even keep a few notes about how you felt it went using the seminar checklist. This will help you refine and develop your skills and learn more from the experience of presenting.
Self-evaluation checklist:
Your preparation        | Visual aids, handouts etc. Were they useful and clear? |
Your language and speech   | Speed, tone, intonation, articulation, volume etc. were they appropriate? |
Introduction | Did you demonstrate interest and make your objectives clear to your audience? |
Audience attention and interaction | How did your audience participate, ask questions, show their interest etc? |
Body language and confidence      | Review how you manage any mannerisms or habits which may distract. Did you appear confident and credible? |
Sources | Did you present your references and sources effectively – were they the best sources to use? |
Summary and conclusions    | Did you give a clear summary of the main points? Did you draw out the implications, limitations and assumptions? Did you engage appropriately with your audience? |
