Bachelor of Business Computing

The Business Computing BSc degree is a challenging course that provides highly relevant, hands-on experience. Through a mixture of theory and real-world practice, you’ll learn how to determine a dynamic mix of processes, which allow information delivery systems and users to carry out business effectively and efficiently. You’ll come to intuitively understand how an organization’s information systems need to adapt to the changes and developments natural to growth and progress.

The modules on this degree course cover a range of topics, including the basic properties of software artefacts like information, algorithms, programs, common commercial system, and network architectures. System development approaches are also covered, including requirements capture, design methods, models, tools and techniques, implementing and testing systems, and software maintenance. Appreciation of project management issues arising from team-based software development is a key feature of the degree.

We’ll ensure that you have a strong approach to problem-solving both individually and in groups involving model-building and analysis, applying both theoretical and empirical knowledge to make choices and find solutions. You will also master commonly used notations and methods to reason and communicate clearly about requirements, specifications, designs and solutions. All factors which contribute to whether a business sinks or swims.

Our course is designed for flexibility, so if you’re not sure which route you want to go down, you can select modules and specialize gradually during your time with us.

This course will give you a comprehensive introduction to computing within an organization. You’ll feel fully equipped and able to assess and solve computing issues that face businesses today.

This course can be studied 4 years full-time with placement, starting in September.

Careers and your future

Our Business Computing graduates enjoy excellent employment prospects. With the ability to handle the increasing demands of scientific, technological and commercial development in the 21st century, you’ll be in high demand with the wide-ranging companies and organizations increasingly dependent on computer technology.

You could go on to a career such as software developer, business analyst, web developer, technical architect or helpdesk engineer.

Teaching and Learning

We take an innovative, dynamic and highly participative approach to teaching. Around 40 academic staff teach in the department.

Teaching is carried out via lectures, lab work, small group-work, and one-to-one sessions. Lectures offer a broad overview of key concepts and ideas allowing you to then pursue more in-depth study independently. Lab work helps you develop your technical skills to build software. You’ll do some individual work, but a tutor will be assigned to you to lead discussion on common issues, when they arise.

Assessment and feedback

Assessment and feedback varies from one module to another and may be based entirely on coursework, entirely on examination. As you progress, you’ll learn how to reliably assess the quality and value of your own before you submit it.

Coursework and assessment

Assessment is by taught examinations, coursework, assignments, group assessment and presentations.

Bachelor of Civil Engineering

Civil engineering at Global University enables you to lay the right foundation for a career in civil engineering with a Four-year course that will not only lead to a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) qualification, but also arm you with the skills, knowledge and confidence to enter an industry that, at its core, makes modern society work.

Civil engineering deals with the design, construction and maintenance of our built environment, from buildings to bridges, roads to railways – and considers what this means for the future of our planet and society.

In the first two years of our BEng in Civil Engineering you will develop a strong understanding of essential topics such as structural analysis, hydraulics, geotechnics, construction materials, engineering design, project management and mathematics. What’s more, you will study these topics using our fantastic array of facilities and equipment.

You will then undertake an individual research project in your final year, when you will have the flexibility to study emerging subjects such as renewable energy systems and resource efficiency and management.

Upon completion of the course you will be equipped to enter civil engineering professions – the degree fully satisfies the base for becoming an Incorporated Engineer (IEng), and partially satisfies the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng). This can then be completed with a programme of accredited Further Learning.

You will also benefit from our welcoming community, where you can join some of the Department’s various student societies, such as The University of Global Civil Engineering Society, to meet like-minded people, make new friends and explore all things civil engineering.

Aims

The course aims to:

  • Provide you with a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of engineering science, analysis, and management.
  • Give you an in-depth understanding of design.
  • Help you to learn important transferable skills, such as problem-solving, team working, creativity, IT skills, and oral and written communication.
  • Develop an understanding of the economic, social, ethical and environmental contexts that are relevant to becoming a professional civil engineer.

Teaching and learning

At Global University you will be taught by academic staff who are leading experts in civil engineering, in a diverse and inclusive learning environment.

We use a combination of teaching and learning methods, including lectures, tutorial classes, practical laboratory sessions and computer-based sessions.

There is a design project each year, which involves teamwork in small groups, and allows you to apply and develop your problem-solving and project management skills.

In the Four year, you will undertake an individual project, allowing you to pursue an emerging subject or application area in greater depth.

Coursework and assessment

Assessment is by taught examinations, coursework, assignments, group assessment and presentations.

Course unit details

During the Last years, the course is broad-based and covers topics such as structural analysis, hydraulics, geotechnics, construction materials, engineering design, project management and mathematics. In the final year, you undertake an individual research project and have options to study emerging subjects crucial to the future of society such as renewable energy systems and resource efficiency and management.

Facilities

The Global University offers extensive library and online services to help you get the most out of your studies.

Most of the technical course units within our civil engineering programmes involve physical laboratory tests, and the Department has an array of specialist equipment to facilitate this.

This includes dedicated structures, hydraulics and geotechnics laboratories, with facilities including wave flumes, structures and materials testing facilities, and a geotechnics centrifuge.
